Several months ago I made laundry detergent and have been using it since September 2010. In those months we have gone through almost 2 batches. It was very cost effective, as the ingredients were very inexpensive. Another thing I really liked it that I did not have to be concerned about running out of detergent, because in a matter of minutes I can make more.
But now I think I am ready to go back to traditional detergent. I have been noticing that while our clothes have been getting clean, they have been retaining odors. It was not really noticeable in the cold of winter, but now that summer temps are here and we are working out of doors, it is very noticeable! There are several Cross Country runners in the house and we live on a farm, our clothes often have odors. Enough said. I am all about saving money, but I really like clean and clean smelling clothes!
So, I will continue to use the home made detergent for linens and lightly soiled clothes, but I am going back to traditional detergent for the bulk of our laundry. I am now on the look out for great deals on He laundry soap. My stock pile was pretty much depleted prior to making the bucket of soap in September, so I need to get right on this adventure. Actually, I tried to stock up on Purex last week at CVS, but my store was out when I got there. I did get a rain check, but the shelf was still empty today. Hopefully next week. Until then, I will be using the sample packages I have received over the last couple of months. I usually save the samples for my college girls as they do not like carrying large bottles of soap down 3 flights of stairs to the laundry facility in the basement of their residence hall.
What are your thoughts? Any ideas on using home made soap and getting rid of odors on clothes?
