Ingeborg is again the center character in this newest novel by Lauraine Snelling. She wants to be more independent and is trying to find a real purpose for her life. She has always been willing to help her father in the barn with the animals, even though most girls do not help in the barn. And then her mother has her come along to help with a difficult birth. And help she did! Because of her work in the barn she knew how to turn the baby and assist with the baby. She feels she has found her calling, become a midwife. But her mother did not invite her along on other births.
Finally she and the older children head to the summer house with the sheep and cows, where there is good grass. They enjoy the time to work out of doors and in doors- making cheese, spinning and weaving.
Nils, to have a definite purpose in his life, which was not running his father’s business. But his father did not understand. Nils is trying to please his father, but also be true to himself. He is studying at the university, but really wants to be in the mountains. After an accident when he was badly injured, he tries to continue his studies, but it was very difficult. Following the end of the term, he heads to the mountains, where he falls and breaks his leg. Will he die on the side of a mountain?
I enjoyed this book. Since we live on a sheep farm, a lot of the details are so familiar to us. The family interactions were somewhat complicated, due to the numerous characters, but it was great to see how they worked together.
