“War on Christmas” Battles in Faith, Tradition, and Religious Expression by Bodie Hodge, book review
Thanksgiving is just over and the excitement of Christmas is in the air. So what is Christmas really about these days? It is so much more complicated that it used to be. Or is it?
Bodie Hodge has approached the subject of Christmas from a Biblical perspective and explored many different avenues and traditions. I think we all have memories from our growing up years an what Christmas was. That is often challenged when we get married and must merge family traditions. And in more recent years there has been rules and laws passed that try to change what Christmas looks like in various communities.
“War on Christmas” explores many aspects, traditions and expectations. The book is very pretty to look at, with nice photos and decorations. I view this book as pretty academic rather than for just pleasure reading. It would be good for a Sunday School class or small group study. The research is extensive and endnotes are included. It did take me a while to read because there is just so much information. If you are searching for your own personal view of Christmas or trying to focus your family’s traditions, this book will give you A LOT of food for thought.
